The Mellifera Association brings a smile to honeybees
Catalinas cup shows a colourful flower meadow. The motto of the cup is "the earth laughs in flowers". And who makes the earth smile? The Apis Mellifera, also known as the regular honey bee. The small pollinators fly from plant to plant and carry the pollen out into the wide meadows.
To ensure that the meadows continue to give us a colourful smile with a full blossom splendour, the Mellifera Association would like to give the honey bee its smile back.
Bee Happy: Beekeeping in accordance with its nature
The association is committed to beekeeping and the protection of the honeybee. Essentially: This means that beekeepers must keep the living conditions of the bees close to those in the wild.
The insects should be able to behave according to their nature. Queens are not artificially bred, the combs are made of natural material only.
Let all things flow their natural way. Thus, in beekeeping appropriate to their nature, swarming is not prevented. If the queen wants to form a new bee colony with some workers, she can swarm out unhindered.
To bee or not to bee – more than just honey
Protection of nature also means protection of the honeybee. Industrialization in agriculture is increasingly damaging the health of bees. Pesticides and an ever-decreasing variety of plants are giving the busy pollinators a hard time.
The Mellifera Association is part of the network "Blooming Landscapes". Farmers, gardeners, nature conservationists and beekeepers develop new concepts together. The aim is to improve agriculture and thus also the habitats for flower-visiting insects. Because only a happy and healthy bee also leads to a colourful world of plants.
Busy as a bee – learning about honeybees
The association established the apiary "Fischermühle" when it was founded in 1985. Here new practices are researched and passed on to beekeepers. Whether layman or professional, every beekeeper can learn something about the appropriate keeping of bees.
We too can learn something from the bee colony. Through the schooling initiative "Bienen machen Schule" (meaning "Bees are catching on") children and young people learn everything about the honey bee and can even watch the busy little bees at work.
